Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is about to enter general release after an extensive early access period. This is one of the biggest releases for the series in a long time. With a lot of players jumping in on launch day, you’ll want to be acquainted with the basics of the game first. Knowing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps will help you make the best start possible in the game, and avoid those early games of wandering around lost in each new area!
This map guide covers all of the maps that have been shown off so far. Some of the maps are different from game mode to game mode. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going to feature an extensive amount of modes. This necessitates different sized maps to accommodate the different styles of gameplay. This is a breakdown of all of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps seen so far, and what you need to know to get off to the right start on them.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Maps for Multiplayer
Gun Runner
Gun Runner is a map that is going to be available in the larger multiplayer modes. This one is available in both day and night builds. While this won’t make much difference to layout, it is going to make gameplay in the outdoor sections of the map different. The area isn’t particularly open. There are a few spots to leave yourself exposed. With so much cover, the night time map is going to be great for stealth movement. The daytime is going to be all about cover.
Make the most out of the outside sections in this map to put pressure on enemies. Closing them into one of the indoor sections will give you great close combat opportunities. However, you should stay on top of how mobile this map is. With so much cover, it is going to be difficult to establish any choke points without a lot of manpower, you need to take advantage of this.
On this map, medium-range weapons and loadouts are going to be very helpful. Although, as with most Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps close combat is going to play a role once you’ve applied some pressure. This isn’t a great location for snipers, but some elevated spots could help you break through all of the spread-out cover for players.
Hackney Yard
Hackney Yard also has a day and night version available. This map resembles a dock or shipping area. There isn’t all that much cover or indoor spaces. This is going to force players into a more traditional pushing pattern.
There is great scope on this map for snipers. While there is relatively little vertical space, the open ground below you should enable a skilled sniper to make the most of this space. With so many players out in the open, you need to have some players on your team who are effective at long range. This is one of the best Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps for that type of combat.
If you can’t quite manage long-range play effectively, then you should stick to medium range. There is little space or cover to safely approach a player up close on this map.
Azhir Cave
Now, this is a completely different entry to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps. You can probably figure out the inspiration for this type of location if you’ve played any contemporary shooter since the early 2000s. This one is a cave network around a town.
The caves themselves may be enclosed, but they can have wide-open spaces inside of them. This gives some benefit for medium ranges players if they’re properly supported. Close-range combat is going to be really effective here, as are properly managed chokepoints.
With winding paths and a maze-like layout, you’re going to be able to ambush players. This map could be deadly in the hands of an organized team. Try to communicate even more here. Awareness of what is happening elsewhere in the maze is really going to give you an advantage over other teams.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Maps – The Big Maps
Granza
This map is one of the biggest in the game. You’ll only see it in 10 v 10 and 20 v 20 games. Since it is so expansive, it can work for just about any player.
The bigger Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps are pretty multi-purpose and generally favor a well-rounded team. However, there are some players that can excel in bigger maps. Snipers and those effective at medium distances are going to be very important. With so much space to work with, you need to focus on pushing enemies into certain areas. Chokepoints aren’t entirely possible, but rushes and pressure are going to be really helpful.
Snipers can have a field day with this map, just remember to protect your team members pushing forward rather than just picking off players to get a killstreak.
Aniyah Palace
This is another large map. This one is a palace with a small town and road surrounding it. It is staggeringly big and the type of gameplay that is going to succeed may vary depending on your positioning in each map. Medium range loadouts are going to be helpful for being versatile. Snipers may have some luck given the areas size, but it will depend on the performance of the rest of your team.
An objective centered around the Palace gives you the best chance to dominate this map. This structure is the center point and the only spot that is going to give you control over movement around the areas. With such a large size you shouldn’t have any problems with becoming penned in.
Other Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Maps for Multiplayer
There are some other maps that going to be available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, However, there hasn’t been enough time to really asses them yet. We’ll update this to cover these maps soon.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Maps for Gunfight
The Gunfight mode is a specialist two on two game in Call of Duty. This was extensively used in the beta period so a lot of players are pretty familiar with it. These are the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps for the gunfight mode.
King
This is an indoor warehouse map that is pretty basic. There is plenty of cover, but far too much space to properly utilize it for two players on a team. There is a lot of space and the layout is somewhat maze-like. Taking high ground is really helpful for visibility. However, this map will often get reduced to hide and seek. Make the most of this by playing your best stealth game.
Alternatively, pushing around the outside and baiting an encounter can go well in this map. Finding a good vantage point can also benefit medium-range players.
Pine
Pine is a map for 2 v 2 in a forest. While the trees provide most of the map there are clusters of shipping containers to navigate too. This one features more cover that can be effectively watched from enemies. You may get into a war of attrition firing out a couple of shots in this map.
Unlike King, there isn’t too much benefit for playing hide and seek to wait for a close combat encounter here. Instead, you need to keep your eyes out in the forest for movement and try to take on at medium range.
Stack
Stack is pretty similar to King, although this time it is outside. This once again means that moving quickly and looking for a close combat opportunity is going to be a good tactic. This is one of the simpler Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps. Long-range isn’t going to be particularly effective. Medium range might be helpful in certain spots of the map, but you’ll need to defend from an unexpected attack if you’re attempting this kind of play.
Other Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Maps for Gunfight
As with multiplayer, there are a few more Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps available for gunfight that we haven’t had much time with yet. This guide will be updated after release when more is known about proper tactics there.
