Want to win in Fortnite and finally get that long-awaited Victory Royale? It’s difficult to get that first win. This guide can help you and show you the tactics you’ll need to win in Fortnite.
Fortnite is a multiplayer game in which you have to beat all of your opponents in order to get a victory. 100 players drop-in, and you search around for a loadout of loot and healing items. Then you’ve got to rotate around the map, stay away from the storm, and preferably pick up some eliminations along the way. Eventually, you’ll be in a small spot with only a few players remaining. Your job is to kill everyone that’s left and be the last man standing.
All of that isn’t simple though. Getting a load of kills is pretty difficult. You don’t have to be one of the world’s best Fortnite players to get a win though. You just need to understand both the basics of the game and the strategies you need to win. Games of Fortnite can really be broken down into a few stages and things that can happen. Once you master the strategy for each of these elements, getting your first win comes down to applying them in-game and not choking. Sure, a Battle Royale is going to be unpredictable, but part of learning how to win at Fortnite is working out when to apply what strategy.
This is all you need to know about how to win at Fortnite.
Tips and Tricks To Win Fortnite Solo
Winning at Fortnite comes down to applying the right strategies at the right moments. These are the key tips and tricks to win at Fortnite to get your first victory royale.
1. Choose The Landing Spot Wisely
The most important step for surviving the early game is to choose the right landing spot.
The map is pretty big and each different POI is going to be a different experience for you. If you’re looking to brush up on your combat and aiming, go somewhere that is really busy like Salty Springs. If you want to loot in peace, go to a smaller POI or even a non-named location.
Keep in mind that most players just jump quickly. They head for the first place with a label on the map! The first big location in the bus’s pass is going to be pretty busy, as will new locations. Everyone wants to try out something brand new for its first week. The spots towards the end of the bus route are going to be quiet and easier to loot in peace.
2. Farm Resources
Building is a pretty key mechanic in Fortnite. You can play without building much, but you’re unlikely to win. If you want to win at Fortnite you need to be able to build when you need too, to do that you need mats.
At the beginning of the game, it is important to farm enough mats to be able to get out of any problems that arise. Later in the game, players can end up building tall and wide. These build battles will be concluded pretty quickly if you run out of mats.
Most players get their mats in two ways. The first is to harvest resources at the beginning of the game. The second is by killing other players and taking their resources. You can’t bank on getting the mats from that second category, so make sure you farm a good amount at the beginning of the game. You’ll want a few hundred wood at least and ideally a few hundred brick and metal for stronger defenses later in the game. Farming resources in the late game makes you a sitting duck for other players. So, farming enough early on is key to win in Fortnite.
Building is just as important as weapons at the beginning of the game. For wood, you can get it primarily from walls and trees. Brick is easiest to farm from brick buildings, but there aren’t as many of them. Big rocks out and around on the map are good for gathering brick. Metal used to come mainly from cars, the rate of materials they give though has been nerfed recently though. Frustratingly, you’re now best off finding metal from fixtures and structures inside of buildings.
3. Throw Down Panic Walls
When you get into a firefight, building is always a good choice. If you’re new to Fortnite then it might be best to remember to throw down walls as cover. This gives you quick cover and allows you to get some safety. Take this a step further by putting down some stairs, this gives you the height advantage over the other player.
Box these stairs in to make something fairly secure to give you a quick advantage over players. After this, your opponent might put up a box of their own. This can end up in a box fight, where you and your opponent build upwards to grab the high ground. These fights can get difficult, but throwing up a small box when you get into a shooting match doesn’t always mean you have to have a box fight.
If you’re struggling with building then going to some dedicated box fight servers can help you get some practice in.
4. Get The Right Items
In Fortnite, you have to search out every weapon you want. Sometimes, it can be tricky to get everything that you normally need. The best Fortnite Season 3 weapons can be difficult to find, and there are some weapons that are one of a kind.
If you want to find the right items, it is best to head to a named and larger location. They’ll have more chests and more stuff, so a higher chance of getting what you want. What items you need in a loadout will depend on the way that you like to play. However, there are some basics to keep in mind.
You need a weapon for mid-range and close range. Usually, this is an assault rifle and a shotgun. Beyond that, one slot should really be filled by a healing item. With the remaining slots, you can get a bit more creative. An explosive weapon is a good choice for smashing through builds later in the game. The last slot can be more healing or something a bit more specialist like a sniper rifle.
The rarity of the items also makes a difference. The higher tier they are, the more effective they’re going to be. Try to get at least Blue weapons for the last few circles or you’ll be behind other players. Grey is only really good for when you’ve just landed.
5. Go For Supply Drops
In games, supply drops will fall from the sky at some point. Often you’ll get one with the first circle, and more as time goes on. These drops are visible on the map and marked in-game by blue smoke. If you open one up you get a Launchpad which is important in the late-game, mats, ammo, and a high tier weapon. Essential kit to win in Fortnite.
These drops are a great way to guarantee yourself some high-level loot. However, every player will want them. If the supply drop is in a busy place or inside the circle, other players will try to go for it too and you might have to fight a few off. Keep this in mind when you head for a supply drop. You need to make sure you’re not walking right into an ambush!
Equally, once the map gets pretty small a supply drop might draw out the last few players. Keep an eye on them to see if you can find some of those last players hiding out.
6. Build Strategic Forts in Late-game
To survive longer in Fortnite, going for the high ground is really important. It isn’t enough to just jump a single ramp in the late-game though.
You will likely end up having to build a few levels up once you hit the late game. Even outside of build fights, one layer isn’t much protection against explosive weapons. Go a few stories up, but this has its own problems.
Forts can be knocked out if you destroy their base. This means you need to build a good foundation if you’re going up high. Otherwise, a mini-gun or drum-gun could easily make you fall to the ground. Make sure your fort is properly supported as the fall could eliminate you accidentally.
In the late game, the fort is going to give you cover and a defense to help you win at Fortnite. The higher up you are, the more cover and defense you have. This is much better than just running around. You would be exposed and easy to hit. Build a fort with good support if you want to win in Fortnite in the late game.
7. Keep an Eye On the Ring, and Plan Ahead
As the game progresses, the circle is going to get smaller and smaller. In the early game, you basically just have to chase the circle as it moves unless you land in exactly the right spot. As the game moves on though, you should try to not be on the run at all times. Getting chased by the storm will put you on the backfoot when you run into other players. So what do you need to do?
Try to make an educated guess about the circle and how the map is going to move. Once the circle is relatively small, you can start looking for a place to camp out and build that bigger fort. Try to stay on the high ground. Once the circle gets really small, sticking to the raised area will help you stay in the best position possible once it narrows down a little.
As the circle closes in, moving around isn’t all that safe. That doesn’t mean you should just hand out in one spot though. Push players and chase down opponents who expose themselves too much to pick up kills and their mats. Try to keep yourself in the best position though to win at Fortnite.
Conclusion
Those were some of the essential tips to help you learn how to win at Fortnite. A lot of this is going to come with practice and patience though. It can take a while, and a good part of getting better at Fortnite is to build up muscle memory. You’ll need to get better at aiming, building fast, and learning how to judge what action to take in a game. Don’t get disheartened by a lot of losses, each loss is going to be teaching you something and helping you develop.
